Update: Wolves now readying transfer offer to sign “remarkable” report £40m+ star

With Wolverhampton Wanderers enjoying a successful maiden campaign under Gary O’Neil, it is clear that the club are eager to back their manager by giving him some much-needed reinforcements this summer.

Striker top of Wolves’ shopping list

Despite being rarely shy to splash the cash on a number nine, it is clear that recent high-profile strikers to arrive at Molineux have failed to hit the ground running.

Despite spending a club record £35m fee to secure his services, Fabio Silva struggled in the Midlands and was eventually shipped off for a loan spell with Rangers. It was a similar story with the 2019 signing of Patrick Cutrone, with the £25m fee spent on the Italian forward yielding just two Premier League goals.

Wolves have had some success this season with the partnership of Hwang Hee-chan and Matheus Cunha yielding a combined 19 goals in the Premier League. However, it is still clear that the side is crying out for an out-and-out number nine.

Update on Wolves’ Nketiah pursuit

Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke was the first to disclose that Wolves were going to make an attempt to recruit Eddie Nketiah, an Arsenal striker. The outlet has been informed by sources that Wolves will face competition for the 24-year-old’s services from Crystal Palace and Brentford, giving the Midlands team a chance to capture him.
Although Wolves had previously been said to have shown interest in the striker, this development means that O’Neil’s team will now make an official bid to acquire their man. According to reports, the Gunners have set a minimum asking price of £40 million for Nketiah, which is quite a bargain in the current transfer market.

Nketiah has reportedly been pressing for a move out of north London due to Kai Havertz’s comeback to form and Arsenal’s pursuit of Ivan Toney, despite being on the outside of the Gunners’ starting lineup for the majority of his professional career.

Whilst Nketiah’s stats for Arsenal don’t make for great reading, it has long been common knowledge that the 24-year-old is a quality striker starved of genuine game time. Nketiah stands as the all-time top scorer for England’s under-21 side, breaking a record held by Alan Shearer for decades.

Nketiah received his first senior call-up in August 2023, and Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate was eager to laud the forward, telling the media:

Eddie is entering a certain region, therefore we want to take a peek at him. A youthful talent with a strong lineage, exceptional finishing ability, and the Under-21 team’s record goalscorer.

The striker has received similar praise from the team’s manager, Mikel Arteta, who praised his “remarkable” efforts from earlier in the season.

Nketiah scored his first career hat-trick in the Gunners’ 5-0 thumping of Sheffield United back in October, continuing his strong play from the beginning of the season. Considering the talent of the forward, it’s certain that Nketiah might eventually reach his full potential as a Premier League star under the guidance of a manager such as O’Neil.Fabio Silva,
