‘Idiot’ – Patrick Bamford opens up on Leeds United celebration and Daniel James conversation

The latest Leeds United news as the striker has revealed that he wanted to take the free kick that led to the third goal vs Leicester City.

The striker for Leeds United, Patrick Bamford, claimed that he appeared to be a bit of a “idiot” when he celebrated alone after his team’s third goal against Leicester City.Patrick Bamford and Georginio Rutter celebrate at full time during the Sky Bet Championship match between Leeds United and Leicester City at Elland Road.

In the final ten minutes of the Friday night game at Elland Road, the Whites completed a comeback. They were behind 1-0 for most of the game, but goals from Connor Roberts, Archie Gray’s deflected shot, and Bamford’s own goal helped them win 3-1.

The third goal came from a free-kick on the edge of the area in added time. Bamford has been credited with the goal after he got a touch on Daniel James’ free kick to send it past Mads Hermansen in the Leicester goal.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the former Chelsea man has revealed a conversation between him and James just after the free kick was awarded.

“To be fair, I wanted to take the free kick and DJ was like ‘no I’m having it’,” he said. “So I was like ‘what side are you going to go’ and he said ‘Keeper’s side ‘, so I was like ‘alright I’ll go and stand in front of the keeper and I just threw my knee at it and I guess it was a little bit lucky that it hits me and goes in but I’ll claim it.”

As Bamford wheeled away in celebration on one side of the pitch, all of his teammates joined James on the other side in celebrating the goal. The striker said he was too caught up in the moment before he realised what was going on.

“As I was running off I didn’t realise, I turned around and everyone is on the other side of the pitch,” he said of his celebration. “I looked a bit of an idiot there.”

The 30-year-old was touch and go ahead of the game after missing the last two matches through injury. He was, however, deemed fit enough to make the bench and entered the pitch with 25 minutes left to play.
