‘Licking my lips’ – Maidstone sent FA Cup message as Coventry City take a pounding

Preston North End defeated Coventry City 3-0 at home tonight, although Sky Blues supporters were not overly shocked by the outcome.

Preston has gone 21 league games against the Sky Blues without losing, a streak that dates back to 2007, and it never seemed like it would end at the CBS Arena.

Coventry City's Ellis Simms (left) and Preston North End's Liam Millar battle for the ball during the Sky Bet Championship match at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Emil Riis’ header in the first minute set the tone, and Will Keane doubled the lead before Bobby Thomas’ own goal put the home team behind three goals at the break.

After the interval, Mark Robins’ team turned the tide, but by then, Coventry had already suffered their first home loss since October, and the damage had already been done.

Sky Blues fans have been vocal about their opinions over the match, particularly in light of Monday night’s FA Cup matchup versus massive killers Maidstone.

What some of them have been stating on social media is as follows:

Nick Henderson: Is anyone really surprised? Injuries mounting, players underperforming, if I was a Maidstone fan I’d be licking my lips.

Jimmy: The constant disruption to the defence was going to catch us out eventually. If we are honest we would say this has been coming. Simms the only positive. Preston definitely our one true bogey team. Got to pick themselves up now.

Jake: If chants for Jake Bidwell when he’s not even on the pitch and Ellis Simms being our best player by an absolute mile doesn’t tell you everything, I don’t know what will.

Lloyd Slater: One result doesn’t shape the season. A long time and plenty of games to go.

Skyblueb: When will Robins learnt that De Silva cannot defend? Every time he drops Bidwell the left side of defence looks vulnerable. it is OK to make the mistake once, second time is careless, but third and fourth times is unacceptable.

Paul Adams: Never beat Preston, so not a shock that we lost. Awful performance though, which is the frustrating part.

Chris D: This has been coming for a while now. Got away with it in the last few games, but we are just not the same without Sheaf. The sooner he’s back, the better. Some lads need to have a hard look at themselves after that performance.

Sean: Awful! Forget it, its gone, move onto the next! Get these results every now and then, doesn’t define the season! Fingers crossed for good news on Tatsu!
