QPR £20m revelation horrifies as Leeds United handed boost over ‘incredible’ £40m…

QPR have got football fans talking with their accounts as Watford confirm the signing of an AFCON youth star.

In a thrilling encounter with promotion-chasing Ipswich Town on Tuesday night, QPR’s relegation rivals Rotherham United suffered yet another setback. To further punish the Millers, the Tractor Boys responded to a goal equalizer in the 94th minute with a victory in the 95th.

This Saturday, the Rs take on Rotherham at Loftus Road in what appears to be a crucial chance for Marti Cifuentes to pick up three more points.

QPR feature alongside Watford and Leeds United in your Wednesday Championship round-up.

With just one loss in their previous six Championship games, things were beginning to get better for QPR, who were struggling under new manager Marti Cifuentes. There are rumblings of optimism at Loftus Road as the Rs have emerged victorious against Millwall, Blackburn Rovers, and Bristol City to spark a survival battle.

But this week, QPR supporters received a harsh reality check when the London team released its financial statements for the 22–23 campaign. The alarming findings stunned not just the team but also football fans nationwide. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire revealed the information on X.

It emerged that QPR had not spent any money on transfer fees for players but still managed to record a £20 million loss – despite making £2 million from player sales. The club spent £12 million on training facilities and were leant £30 million by shareholders.

It’s now three years in a row that the club has suffered losses of around £20 million as the pressure to stay in the Championship and avoid a devastating relegation to League One mounts.

Leeds United receive boost over wonderkid’s future

Leeds United have been handed a boost in their bid to keep Archie Gray at Elland Road this summer with rumoured suitors Liverpool unlikely to cough up the £40 million price tag on the star this summer.

Regarding the 17-year-old, journalist Neil Jones stated in an update on his Substack website that it would ‘feel like a weird move’ for the Reds to invest in him because there are already too many choices at Anfield, including talented young players. Gray is a versatile player who can play both central midfield and full-back.

“You are bound to attract attention when you are 17 and playing at the level Archie Gray has been playing at, and on such a consistent basis,” Jones stated. Liverpool has once again been linked to the Leeds wonderkid.

“However, Liverpool sources were rather dismissive of reports that surfaced earlier in the season indicating the Reds were prepared to spend a significant amount of money on the teenager. Although he is clearly a gifted player, it is difficult to see too much logic in such a deal at this time.”

Gray has been linked to Manchester United as well. He just extended his Leeds United contract through 2027–2028. Described as ‘amazing’ and ‘phenomenal’ by former Whites great Jermaine Beckford this season, the young player’s reputation will undoubtedly continue to grow at Elland Road.

Watford sign Mali youth star

Watford have confirmed the signing of Mali youngster Mamadou Doumbia. The 18-year-old is set to make the move to London from Black Stars FC in Mali this summer.

Doumbia impressed with Mali at the under-17 Africa Cup of Nations and the Hornets wasted no time in snapping up the highly-rated talent. It’s the first piece of business confirmed by Watford ahead of the summer window opening.

“Watford FC is thrilled to confirm the signing of exciting Mali youth international striker Mamadou Doumbia on a five-year contract,” the club said in a statement. On July 1, 2024, the left-footed 18-year-old will sign a contract with the Hornets from Black Stars FC in Mali.

“At 6 feet 3 inches tall, Doumbia blends flair and excellent ball control with his innate finishing instincts. With four goals in five games as Mali placed fourth in the 2023 Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations, Doumbia made a huge impression on the world stage.”
