JUST IN: Matt Hobbs: The sporting director of Wolves is suspended for one game

The Football Association has fined Matt Hobbs £4,000 and suspended him for one match for swearing at referee Anthony Taylor, the sporting director of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

After a Premier League draw at Molineux in October against Newcastle United, Hobbs chastised the official.

In his report, Taylor added that Hobbs stated, “we look forward to your apology again” in a “sarcastically” manner.

The FA accused Hobbs of misbehavior earlier this month.

An independent regulatory commission stated in written reasons for its decision that Hobbs cursed at Taylor and referred to him as “useless” following the game.

Hobbs acknowledged the incident and expressed regret, according to the commission, but his actions “clearly fell below the expected standard”.

Hobbs claimed he felt the game’s decisions “exacerbated two incorrect decisions earlier in the season” and that he had grown “increasingly frustrated” with them.

Just before halftime, with the score tied at 1, Hwang Hee-chan was given a penalty kick for allegedly fouling Fabian Schar.

After a protracted video assistant referee check, referee Taylor signaled the spot. Callum Wilson scored to give the Magpies a 2-1 lead. The decision was upheld.

Gary O’Neill, the manager of Wolves, referred to the spot-kick as a “scandalous decision” and criticized the VAR for not sending Taylor to the pitchside monitor to rewatch the incident.

He continued: “Terrible on-field decision and terrible that VAR did not intervene so, yeah, I thought they got it badly wrong.”

Premier League head referee Howard Webb subsequently acknowledged that VAR ought to have stepped in.

That followed some poor decisions made by Wolves earlier in the season, such as having to accept an apology for not being given a penalty against Manchester United on the road.

More VAR controversy erupted on Monday during Wolves’ 3-2 loss to Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Once again infuriated, O’Neil declared that poor refereeing choices are hurting “livelihoods” and “reputations”.

“Maybe this evening has finally made me dislike VAR,” the forty-year-old said to Sky Sports.

Wolves, currently ranked 12th in the standings, will take on leaders Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Saturday at 15:00 GMT.
