On deadline day, the Reds added Matz Sels from RC Strasbourg in Ligue 1 to bolster Nuno’s goalkeeping options even more. Odysseas Vlachodimos and Matt Turner have both struggled since coming to the City Ground in the summer, which led to that signing.

Shortly after the winter transfer window closed, there were rumors that David de Gea, the goalkeeper for Manchester United, had rejected a trade to Forest before Sels was signed by the Reds. Sam Johnstone of Crystal Palace, another former United goalkeeper, was also mentioned.

But Reds boss Nuno has appeared to hint that claims linking the club with De Gea and several other keepers were not accurate in his praise for their new Belgian goalkeeper.

Nuno praised Matt as a capable and seasoned goalkeeper, saying, “It made sense to sign him and give us another option among our goalkeepers. He was playing regularly for his club.”

It doesn’t matter what his initial choice was or wasn’t. Matz is a talented goalie, which is why he is here. He’s been to this part of England previously.

“A thousand names surfaced for goalkeepers we were associated with, many of which were untrue. He is an all-around goalie. He has finished all of the technical requirements for distribution and a shot stopper at this point in his career.

“He has all the potential to develop into the goalie we need. A goalie should instill trust in us. We anticipate that he will develop into a viable choice for us in this way.
