Coventry City under Mark Robins suffered heartbreak in the previous season’s play-off final, losing to Luton Town at Wembley Stadium in a penalty shootout.

The Sky Blues are back in the running for the top six and will be hoping that their experience from the 2022–2023 playoffs will help them cross the finish line and secure a spot in the play-offs, with the ultimate goal of going to the Premier League.

Having advanced from League Two to League One in 2018 and from the third division to the Championship in 2020, Robins’ team has been rising in recent years. But which Sky Blues players from the previous four seasons are the most paid?

2020/21 – Callum O’Hare

CONTRACT: Callum O'Hare signs new Sky Blues deal! - News - Coventry City

O’Hare originally joined the Sky Blues on loan from Aston Villa ahead of the 2019/20 season, before permanently joining Robins’ men in summer 2020.

The 2020/21 season witnessed O’Hare and co. finish 16th in the Championship and 12 points clear of danger in their first second tier season since relegation at the end of the 2011/12 campaign.

Appearances 45
Starts 43
Goals 5
Expected Goals (xG) 10.3
Assists 8
Expected Assists (xA) 7.10

The former Villa player scored five goals and provided eight assists in 2020–21, which is a pretty good return, especially considering it was his first Championship season at the Sky Blues. According to Caplogy, the star was making almost £10,000 a week during that campaign.

O’Hare is still an integral member of Robins’ squad and may be the spark that leads his team to the Championship play-offs for the second year running.

2021/22 – Martyn Waghorn

With the exception of a loan stint at Huddersfield Town in the second half of the 2022–2023 Championship season, the striker, who is currently a member of League One powerhouse Derby County, played for the Sky Blues from 2021 to 2023.

The Sky Blues continued their upward trajectory under Robins, finishing 12th at the end of the 2021–2022 Championship season, improving on their previous finish of 16th.

Despite Waghorn’s meagre output of one goal and two assists in 27 Championship games and 11 starts, Capology estimated that he made £10,385 a year, making him the club’s biggest earner.

2022/23 – Martyn Waghorn

The former Leicester City player, who is currently believed to be making £10,385 a week, was the highest paid Sky Blues permanent player for the 2022–2023 campaign, according to Capology estimations.

Though it’s unknown how much of that Coventry was paying, Luke McNally, who was on loan at Robins’ side from Burnley, the 2022–23 Championship winners, was thought to be making £17,115 per week.

2023/24 – Haji Wright and Ellis Simms

Ellis Simms of Coventry City

Perhaps one of the most burning questions Sky Blues fans have is wondering who their club’s highest-paid player is, and as per Capology estimates, in terms of those on permanent deals, the answer is Haji Wright and Ellis Simms.

According to Capology, Luis Binks, who is on loan from Italian Serie A team Bologna, is the Sky Blues player earning the highest weekly salary this season at £30,000, albeit it’s possible that the Sky Blues are just covering a portion of that amount.

Unlike Binks, fellow summer additions Wright and Simms became part of Robins’ squad permanently; according to Capology, the attacking pair each make around £25,000 a week.

It’s interesting to note that Wright and Simms’ earnings are far more than those of the Sky Blues’ next best earners, O’Hare, Kasey Palmer, and Jay Dasilva, who are all anticipated to make £10,000 per week, according to Capology estimations.
