Despite no longer being in the “same category as Jude Bellingham & Erling Haaland,” USMNT player Gio Reyna is considered “the signing of the January transfer window” after joining Nottingham Forest.

To the surprise of some, United States international playmaker Reyna opted to head for the City Ground on deadline day as the winter recruitment window came to a close. With game time proving to be in short supply at Borussia Dortmund, life in the Bundesliga has been traded for that in the Premier League.

Gio Reyna Nottingham Forest 2024

Reyna has had a fair deal of injury setbacks lately, which has kept his full potential from being realized, but he should have plenty of chances to shine at Forest. The Reds’ ability to produce him alongside players like Anthony Elanga and Morgan Gibbs-White should allay Nottingham’s fears of relegation.

Earnshaw, who played for both Forest and MLS, said to LiveScoreBet: “I’ve known Gio Reyna since he was 17 and he was in the same category as Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland. He is not very well known here, but he is super well known in Germany.” I guess everyone was staring at him a few years back. Although his form has somewhat declined over the past year and a half, he is still a talented player. Gio Reyna might be the first player signed during the January transfer window. He fits that creative mold, though, and prefers to play either on the left or right, occasionally as a number 10. You mention Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, who has  had a couple of injuries recently, but he’ll fit straight in there.”

Time is still on Reyna’s side, even though he hasn’t yet reached the heights of his old Dortmund teammates Bellingham and Haaland. With 24 senior caps for the United States under his belt, the 21-year-old made his Forest debut off the bench in their 1-1 draw with Bournemouth. This Saturday, he will attempt to make his home debut for his new employers against Newcastle, since he is not eligible to play in an FA Cup rematch against Bristol City.
