Tottenham transfer mooted with Chelsea ‘needing £100m by June 30’ to avoid ‘big’ FFP sanctions

At the beginning of the next transfer window, Chelsea is reportedly going to “need £100m” in player sales in order to escape FFP punishments that are “much bigger” than Everton’s.

Due to Financial Fair Play concerns, Mauricio Pochettino’s team was inactive throughout the January transfer window, much like the majority of their Premier League competitors.

The world-class striker Victory Osimhen, who has stated he will leave Napoli in the summer, is being strongly linked to Chelsea.

The Blues could have to part with a few of their valuable assets in order to close that deal. Conor Gallagher, a midfield player whose contract expires in 2025, was strongly connected to Tottenham in January and is clearly being sold for a profit.

Stefan Borson, a former financial advisor for Manchester City, believes that Chelsea is headed for “trouble” because they need to “sell well over £100m worth of players” in order to balance their budget.

“In my opinion, there is undoubtedly trouble ahead, and they will undoubtedly fail FFP for the current season unless — and this seems unlikely — they sell players for well over $100 million by June 30th,” Borson stated on talkSPORT.

However, they only have a very little window of time to do that considering that the Euros are right after the season.

Conor Gallagher is scheduled to attend the European Championship starting on June 14th, therefore Chelsea needs to move quickly if they want to ship him before June 30th. Potential bidders will also be aware that Chelsea needs to sell players.

“Chelsea may be set up for a considerably larger breach than Everton, and most significantly, they will view it as intentional. They are unable to cover up behind a stadium and unintentionally violate FFP.

Additionally, Borson says he is “not surprised” that Gallagher and Armando Broja were not pursued by Tottenham and Fulham in January as permanent additions.

Chelsea transfer

“Many people are telling me to sell Gallagher for £60 million, Broja for £40 million, and James for £30 million, but there are no buyers,” said Borson.

“At this point, there is no money in the game, and Premier League [clubs] are not stupid; they won’t bite at these absurd prices for players they don’t think are that good, and they know Chelsea are overachieving.”

Regarding Gallagher and Broja, Borson continued, “It’s not a huge surprise that [Spurs chairman] Daniel Levy sort of halted and said, ‘I’ll wait and see what happens, thank you,’ out of all the people that didn’t bite at £50m-£80m.

“Because he is aware that the Premier League, especially clubs like Spurs, are aware of Chelsea’s situation with regard to PSR Financial Fair Play this year.

“And they’ll take advantage of it, as you’ve seen with [Armando] Broja; at the beginning of the window, they mentioned spending between £50 and £60 million.

“And he ends up going [to Fulham] for maybe nothing—if he plays every game, the loan fee might be zero.”
