After the recent UWCL losses, Bayern Munich’s 1-0 victory over fourth-place Hoffenheim at home on Saturday was a very encouraging, albeit unspectacular, outcome. Only four shots were taken total by Hoffenheim compared to 14 by Bayern; nonetheless, only Klara BĂĽhl’s wonderful free kick halfway through the first half really changed the score.

BĂĽhl’s goal, which was only his second in the league this season, couldn’t have arrived at a better moment.

“I missed a couple of free kicks in the preseason. Since then, I occasionally take the ball after training to practice,” BĂĽhl said following the game (as filmed by FCBayern.com). “I wanted to hit a clean shot into the corner of the goalkeeper’s net. Of course, we’re happy that everything went so smoothly today. That makes me feel wonderful, personally. I’m happy that I could support the group. However, I’m also really happy with the team’s perseverance. It was a challenging time for us recently. Luckily, it didn’t go on for too long. We now wish to continue on this constructive path.

Lea SchĂĽller had a great opportunity to double the lead early in the second half, but her dangerous cross deflected off a defender and the keeper cleared it off the line. Sydney Lohmann’s follow-up shot then struck the crossbar.

Later, SchĂĽller scored but was called offside, and BĂĽhl came close to scoring again but missed the post.

In the end, Bayern appeared to be much closer to blowing the game wide open than allowing their opponents back in, despite the close score. A huge step in the right direction for a team that has been lacking in convincing results lately against a strong Frauen-Bundesliga outfit.
