Bayern Munich’s Serge Gnabry out to prove himself upon return

Gnabry wants to improve on his unimpressive season, which has been hampered by a string of unfortunate injuries.

The truth that Serge Gnabry is enjoying a considerably below-average season at Bayern Munich this season cannot be minimized or sugarcoated. Even when he has been totally fit and healthy, the winger has not been as prolific as both Bayern and Germany know he can be. This is due to his poor injury luck.

After all, through match weeks 30 through 34 of the previous season’s Bundesliga title battle, Bayern’s number 7 scored a few pivotal goals. On the last day of the season, he also assisted Jamal Musiala’s goal that won the match and the championship in a 2-1 victory over FC Köln.

In his 11 appearances in all competitions this season, Gnabry has managed just one goal and zero assists. However, his availability for Thomas Tuchel has been erratic. In Bayern’s 4-0 first-round DFB-Pokal victory at SC Preußen Münster, he suffered a broken hand that sidelined him for a little more than a month. More recently, he has been battling with a muscular ailment since mid-December. Since the shocking 5-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga during match week 14, when he played just five minutes, he has not appeared for Bayern.

When he returns fully healthy and is eligible for Tuchel’s selection, Gnabry plans to dramatically enhance his play in the second half of the season, according to information from kicker’s Georg Holzner (via @iMiaSanMia). The managers of the club will also be closely monitoring him to see how he performs in order to inform the decisions they make about his future. By spring or the beginning of summer, they hope to have made those decisions.

Currently, Gnabry’s deal with Bayern expires in June 2026, but the team has already announced the addition of Bryan Zaragoza from Granada. In addition to Gnabry’s performances for the balance of current season, his inclusion in the squad for the upcoming season may influence the club’s decision on Gnabry.
