According to reports on Tuesday, the Premier League team and the Bundesliga powerhouse were in negotiations to bring the USMNT star to the City Ground.

However, ESPN has recently stated that Marseille, who have also made a deal with Dortmund, would be a fierce rival.

At the conclusion of the season, it is rumored that both proposals have the option to turn the loan agreement into a permanent transfer.

Reyna is at the center of a heated transfer dispute, and it is also reported that two other unidentified clubs have similar agreements in place with Dortmund.

His agent, Jorge Mendes, and father Claudio Reyna are both locked in negotiations with clubs as they hope to find the right solution for the midfielder this month.

It’s thought Dortmund want a transfer fee of around $16m included in any loan deal.

Reyna’s contract at Dortmund ends in June 2025 and he signed with super agent Mendes in December. He has started just twice for Dortmund this season, making 11 further appearances as a substitute.

The 21-year-old, Tyne-and-Wear-born American was once considered one of the hottest up-and-coming prospects in world soccer, but has not managed to score or assist in 13 appearances across all competitions this season.

Now he could play in England and follow in his father’s footsteps. Claudio played midfield for Sunderland and Manchester City, making 87 and 28 appearances respectively. He was well-liked by both groups of fans.

All of January, Reyna’s transfer out of Germany has been mentioned; Sevilla, Real Sociedad, Wolves, and Aston Villa have all expressed interest in the player.

Following the USA’s most recent 1-0 defeat to Slovenia, head coach Gregg Berhalter expressed his support for Reyna’s decision to depart Dortmund this month.

“Every competitive professional aspires to be on the field,” stated Berhalter.

It makes perfect sense that Gio, in this instance, is seeking for other possibilities because he hasn’t been receiving the game time he desires.

In 2020, Reyna made her Bundesliga debut as the youngest American ever, at the age of 17.

He only made two substitute appearances at the 2022 World Cup, and for the majority of last year, Belhalter was replaced by temporary coaches due to a falling out between the Reyna family and Belhalter.

In September, Berhalter went back to coaching, and in October and November, Reyna participated in four games for the United States.

“We are rooting for him to succeed in his goal of playing on a regular basis and excited to see what happens,” Berhalter stated.
