Guardiola led City to a treble last season, which included victories in the FA Cup, Premier League, and Champions League.

The shortlist also included Barcelona’s Xavi, Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi, former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou, who is currently managing Tottenham, Luciano Spalletti, who led Napoli to the Serie A championship, and Guardiola said: “I want to share this trophy and moment with our owners at Manchester City.

“On behalf of my backroom crew and myself, I would like to express my gratitude to all of our players for their eight years of combined service to this club.

“Thank you so much for this amazing journey. Living with them has been incredible, and I don’t know what it means to go there every morning and live with them, win or lose.”

For the second year in a row, Sarina Wiegman, the manager of England, was crowned the greatest women’s coach.

The Dutchwoman, who had also won Euro 2022 at home, led England to the World Cup final in Australia, where they were defeated by Spain.

Chelsea head coach Emma Hayes was also on the shortlist along with Sweden’s Peter Gerhardsson, Jonatan Giraldez (Barcelona) and Tony Gustavsson (Australia).

The FIFA FIFPRO Women’s World XI includes seven members of Wiegman’s England team: defenders Lucy Bronze and Alex Greenwood, goalkeeper Mary Earps, and midfielders Keira Walsh, Alessia Russo, Lauren James, and Ella Toone.

Bronze, a defender for Barcelona, stated: “The women’s game is at its finest point ever.

“We demonstrated that following the World Cup, but women’s football truly has no bounds.

“Every year, it grows in size and quality in England, Spain, and other countries, and each tournament gets better and better.

“Hundreds of thousands of women play football at the highest level, making the game what it is today, but we are standing here representing the World XI.”

Earps, the goalkeeper for Manchester United, was shortly brought back to the stage to accept the best women’s goalkeeper trophy for the second consecutive year.

“This year, I thought it might be the other way around. Last year, I won the award, but I didn’t make the team of the year,” she remarked. “To all of my United and England coaches, I am very grateful. I am just blown away.

I frequently discuss how taking the scenic route wasn’t the easiest path to get here, but in retrospect, everything makes sense.

It taught me to appreciate each day and to be much more ready for the problems I face today.

“If you are having trouble, don’t give up. As 2023 demonstrated, it is never too late to be who you are. Let’s continue speaking up against injustice to transform the world.
