Fans of West Brom and Sunderland should be concerned by this Coventry City statistic: View

Coventry City’s recent run of form will have Sunderland and West Brom worried, given the current state of the Championship table.

Following their impressive 3-1 victory over Leicester City at home on Saturday, the Sky Blues are currently leading the Championship with an eight-game winning streak.

They have played three of the top four teams in the Championship, drawing with Leeds United and Southampton, and most recently defeating league leaders Leicester.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s penalty gave the away team the lead in the M69 derby right before halftime. However, Callum O’Hare’s goal in the 79th minute ignited Coventry’s comeback, and Milan van Ewijk’s goal in the 88th minute sealed the victory. O’Hare’s brace, which made it 3-1, clinched the outcome in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

The team led by Mark Robins has thrust itself into the promotion fight in recent weeks, and after passing Sunderland in the standings, they currently sit sixth in the Championship and hold the final play-off berth.

Championship Table (As it stands January 15th)
Team P GD Pts
1 Leicester City 27 34 65
2 Ipswich Town 27 16 58
3 Southampton 27 19 55
4 Leeds United 27 23 51
5 West Brom 27 15 45
6 Coventry City 27 12 40
7 Sunderland 27 7 40
8 Watford 27 7 39

The race for the play-offs is as tight as ever, and it will certainly be worrying the teams that aren’t in the best run of form.

If Sunderland’s recent performance isn’t cause for concern for supporters, Coventry’s performance will have them very concerned about the team’s near future.

Sunderland appeared to be among the favorites to at least make the play-offs after having a reasonably great start to the season, but recent club turbulence appears to have slowed them down a bit.

The Stadium of Light team fired Tony Mowbray at the start of December and brought in Michael Beale in his stead. However, the Black Cats have only won two league games since Beale’s hiring, and they are currently outside the play-off spots.

Carlos Corberan’s club will undoubtedly be concerned about Coventry’s momentum considering that they are only five points ahead of the sixth-place team, even though West Brom isn’t exactly in poor form—they have won three of their previous four games.

The Baggies will be eager to turn things around this year and give themselves the best chance at promotion because they haven’t made the playoffs in two seasons following their relegation from the Premier League in 2021. However, they will need to keep producing results because the table is so closely packed just below them.

They have one hand on the two spots you think are up for grabs in the top six, but Coventry are exhibiting similar levels of consistency right now and could make the Baggies the team to target. With Leeds United and Southampton both hoping to surpass Ipswich Town to second place in the League, West Brom will be keeping both eyes on the teams currently trailing them, knowing that the task of moving into the top-four remains an enormous one.

Coventry City have turned things around with an eight-game unbeaten run

The Sky Blues came so close to their fairytale promotion to the Premier League at the end of last season, but a defeat on penalties at Wembley to Luton Town saw them narrowly fall short of the top flight.

However, the Sky Blues’ 2023–24 season got off to a somewhat rough start due to the wild ride of the previous year. After 15 games, the team was ranked 20th in the Championship.

After 27 games, Robins’ team is in the final play-off slot and is presently tied for first place in the form table with Southampton, who are playing at a very high level.

Given how close the table is to them, Coventry will want to extend their amazing run of form as much as possible. In the Championship, momentum is crucial, thus they must gain as much ground as they can on the teams lagging behind while they’re playing well.
