Now, Alan Shearer has stated whether or not he believes Eddie Howe should be fired from Newcastle United in the event that they lose to Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.

With three major games approaching, Newcastle’s current losing streak stands at seven games, and things only seem to be getting worse.

Even if January does not go as planned, Shearer asserted on The Rest Is Football podcast that Howe should have enough credit in the bank to maintain his job, though pressure will undoubtedly mount.

Shearer says Howe should stay regardless of the derby result

Given that Newcastle is going through their worst period of play under Howe, it’s hard to forecast right now, therefore the derby game has arguably come at the worst time for the Magpies.

The team hopes to utilize this as a springboard to launch the second half of their season, using it as a new beginning, as they are currently quite low on confidence.

However, if they lose this, they’ll play an in-form Manchester City team before heading to Aston Villa, so any pressure Howe is already under will simply mount.

A loss against Sunderland might rapidly turn sour in the eyes of football fans, but Shearer is confident the 46-year-old will leave January still employed, even if he loses all three games, a sentiment Gary Lineker wholeheartedly concurred with.

Shearer stated on the podcast, “It’s concerning. For amusement, they are shipping objectives. Their ability to seem tight and compact was a big strength of theirs throughout the previous season. However, in the last five or six weeks, in particular, they have become much more open and are offering the opponent several opportunities.

“An other worry is that teams are passing straight through the center. Not only do the back four look extremely vulnerable, but they also appear to be receiving very little protection defensively.

Regarding Eddie. Yes, this is most likely the first test, but is he feeling pressured? He should have enough money in the bank, in my opinion, given what he has done for the football team.

“I am aware that they have a big match against Sunderland on Saturday lunchtime, followed by two league games against City and Villa. He has enough money in the bank to continue and complete his tasks, even in the worst case scenario. He deserves that time.

Gary Lineker then added: “I can’t think for a minute that they would possibly consider changing at this point, he has been superb.”

Howe has always succeeded in the face of adversity

Whether it’s a crushing loss or a loss in the Carabao Cup final, Howe has always been able to rally both the squad and himself after a difficult period in his two years as Newcastle’s manager.

The club was excellent at mounting comebacks, both inside games and from week to week, especially last season; they never appeared to be completely out of it.

However, we’re seeing them slump a little more this year. Whether that’s because of weariness and the amount of injuries is debatable, but it’s a far cry from what they were accomplishing throughout the last Premier League season.
