Wayne Rooney’s term as manager of Birmingham City is anticipated to come to an end today. After taking over for former Coventry City captain John Eustace at St Andrew’s in October, the former captain of Manchester United and England has had a terrible 15 games as manager of Blues.

Under Rooney’s leadership, the Blues have slipped from sixth to 20th place in the Championship after losing nine of their 15 games, including a 2-0 loss to the Sky Blues last month. Under Rooney, the Midland rivals have only managed to collect 10 points out of a potential 45.

Knighthead, the proprietors, have reportedly freed Rooney of his responsibilities, according to The Mirror. The last straw was Blues’ 3-0 loss to Leeds United at Elland Road on New Year’s Day.

Supporters called for Rooney’s head in the second half of the defeat to Leeds and Knighthead have acted.

When Eustace was fired after consecutive home wins over Huddersfield and West Bromwich Albion and replaced with the high-profile appointment, there was a great deal of outcry. Following their 3-1 victory over the Baggies, the Blues were ranked fifth, but since the managerial change, they have been in freefall.

The club’s owners assigned Rooney the mission of bringing a fresh take on “no fear football” when he came with much hoopla back in October. Rooney has suffered as a result of the significant decline in Blues’ performance on the field.
