£90,000-a-week Crystal Palace star signed new contract in ‘shock’ transfer deadline day deal

Crystal Palace’s transfer deadline day was a hectic one that saw plenty of business conducted, but one move seemingly went under the radar.

Oliver Glasner looked to strengthen the core of his squad, reuniting with Maxence Lacroix as his first signing before the window closed.

Eddie Nketiah joined on a permanent deal from Arsenal, with the striker signing for an initial £25million which could rise to £30million.

Matt Turner bolstered the Crystal Palace goalkeeper ranks on loan from Nottingham Forest after Sam Johnstone left to join Wolves on a permanent deal.

Then, finally, Trevoh Chalobah joined on a season-long loan from Chelsea as the defender looks for regular game time once again.

With so much business coming into Selhurst Park on deadline day, some may have missed an exit confirmed by Crystal Palace too.

Odsonne Edouard signed new contract before Crystal Palace exit

One of those exits came for Odsonne Edouard, who joined Leicester City on transfer deadline day on a season-long loan.

The striker has seemingly fallen down the pecking order at the club following the signing of Eddie Nketiah and the imperious form of Jean-Philippe Mateta.

With that in mind, the switch to join the Foxes comes with the idea of earning more game time in the Premier League as his loan side looks to avoid relegation.

However, just before his exit, there were slight concerns over his contract as only one year remained on the deal.

That was fixed by Crystal Palace though as Alan Nixon reports on his Patreon that Odsonne Edouard signed a new deal to keep him at the club until 2027.

The reporter described the contract as a “shock” revelation but said it should help protect the club from losing him on a free next summer.

According to reports on Crystal Palace’s wages, Edouard earns £90,000-a-week, though it remains to be seen if the updated deal impacts that figure.

Why Crystal Palace may have offered Edouard a longer contract

It’s often common practice for teams to offer an extra year on the current deal to players when leaving on loan to help protect their value.

In the case of Edouard though, a three-year deal would take his stay at Copers Cope until 2027, rather than the expected 2026.

The club may have done this to help balance out their own striker ranks, which faced some potential losses over the next year.

Mateta is currently deadlocked in contract talks with Crystal Palace, which could see him leave as a free transfer next summer.

If Edouard was also to leave in the next year or so, it would leave just the new arrival of Nketiah as the only option at centre-forward.

By offering three years to the Frenchman, there is the safety net of having another striker who could stick around next year.

The impact of that will likely depend on the future of Mateta, but as things stand, the forward line is well stocked.
