Newcastle United squad revealed for Tottenham test as Eddie Howe to make Tonali decision

The Magpies are back in Premier League action when they take on Spurs at St James’ Park today

Sandro Tonali’s return to the Newcastle United squad in midweek was a welcome boost for head coach Eddie Howe, who has had to endure a difficult summer in the transfer window.

The Magpies boss has seen no new first-team arrivals, with Lloyd Kelly and William Osula signed as squad players and John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos back-up goalkeepers to Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka. Yes, Lewis Hall’s loan from Chelsea was made permanent, at no little expense, and while United have big hopes for the full-back, he can’t be classed as a new signing.

So having Italian midfielder Tonali back in the ranks must be a huge relief for Howe, especialy as he came through an hour at Nottingham Forest with no issues, putting in an impressive performance. Of course, this being Newcastle, that boost came hand in hand with another injury blow

Joe Willock will miss today’s game with Tottenham with a thigh problem although thankfully initial scans have shown the injury is not as serious as first feared. With the international break looming (already?), Newcastle have the chance to get Callum Wilson back into the squad in the coming weeks, although Sven Botman, Lewis Miley and Jamaal Lascelles remain long-term absentees.

Today also sees Fabian Schar compelte his three-match ban after his red card against Southampton on the opening day, with Emil Krafth expected to continue in his place. Lloyd Kelly could return to the side after starting at Bournemouth, although Lewis Hall regained his place at Forest.

Newcastle United squad vs Tottenham: Pope, Dubravka, Ruddy, Vlachodimos, Trippier, Livramento, Krafth, Burn, Kelly, A Murphy, Hall, Targett, Longstaff, Guimaraes, Joelinton, Tonali, J Murphy, Almiron, Barnes, Gordon, Osula, Isak.
